THE ENGLISH HOME

“The chocolate-box exterior - white walls and thatched roof - of this two-bedroom cottage belies a seriously sexy interior, including a huge copper bath for two. The 13th century village has a medieval church and a traditional pub, and you'll hear little apart from bird song and the occasional clip-clop of horses' hooves. The two-Michelin-star Gidleigh Park is close by”.

The perfectly preserved village of North Bovey is a living snapshot of straw roofs and stone longhouses; there's a 13th century parish church, a groomed green and an authentic pub, the Ring of Bells. Moorland View's Grade-II-listed flagstone floors, lath-and-plaster walls and wooden beams are part of the restored interiors. Sophie Conran Crockery, Brissi linens and pastel Colefax & Fowler prints bring a feel of modern-day Provence by way of Notting Hill. In warm weather, sit in the garden surrounded by the scent of roses and jasmine. On a chilly afternoon, make a start on the supply of marshmallows to be toasted on the log fire.

With its muted palette of chalk, stone and grey, the colour scheme is pared back and relaxed – the perfect backdrop for Suzy’s shimmering and textural furnishings. Louis XV-style armchairs in lime-washed oak and biscuit-coloured silk are paired with thick-pile rugs and a French dining table and bistro chairs. In the downstairs cloakroom, glittering mosaic tiles and a rustic oak plinth compliment the sculptural steel basin.

In the picture-postcard 13th century village of North Bovey on Dartmoor, Suzy's thatched cottage is the perfect retreat. Oak-beamed walls, sheepskin rugs and an inglenook fireplace make it country-cottage cosy, while ornate mirror and a huge copper bath for two add a touch of romantic glamour.

The cottage's main wow factor has got to be the bathroom. A magnificent vintage copper and tin slipper bath dominates the room like a fairytale coach - a honeymooner's dream. The views are wonderful, with acres of open moorland, forests, wild ponies and sheep in the distance and the church spire, village allotments and dozy thatched cottage just outside, framed by a magnificent magnolia in the spring and rambling roses in the summer. All the window seats are tempting covered with deep fitted cushions to sit and soak up the views.

The cottage appeals as much in winter as it does in summer. This is exemplified by a cosy fireside area in the living room that is countered by a pretty bloom-filled garden that begs to host al-fresco meals in milder months.
