FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DO YOU HAVE AVAILABILITY?
Our online calendar has up-to-date availability.
DO YOU ACCEPT CHILDREN?
We accept babes-in-arms and children aged over eight. There are various risks at the cottage, including a stove, breakables at low level and a garden pond that make the cottage unsuitable for young children.
IS THERE ROOM FOR A COT?
Yes, in either bedroom, or on the landing at a squeeze. We provide a travel cot and bedding free of charge.
WHAT TIME IS CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT?
Check-in is from 4pm. Check-out is no later than 11am. Unfortunately we can’t offer early check-in or late check-outs as we need the full day to prepare the cottage, but if you arrive early, you’re welcome to collect the Bovey Castle card from the cottage so that you can use their facilities. Please let us know if you wish to do this. Anytime after noon is fine. Our village pub is a lovely place for a drink or lunch, or you could have a stroll along the river at the bottom of the village.
HOW DO I GET ACCESS?
The keys will be left in a key safe for you outside the property. We’ll send you the code and full directions before you arrive.
HOW DOES THE BOVEY CASTLE MEMBERSHIP WORK?
As a guest of Moorland View, you have full access to all activities at Bovey Castle, with up to 25% off food, drink and spa treatments. The castle is a 15-minute walk through the woods from North Bovey, or a five-minute drive. You can book spa treatments, meals and activities before you arrive. Simply show the membership card when paying for anything to get your discount.
WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND WE DO DURING OUR STAY?
> See our guide to our favourite things to do in Dartmoor and Devon.
WHAT SHOULD WE BOOK AHEAD OF OUR ARRIVAL?
Spa treatments or golf at Bovey Castle, dinner at Gidleigh Park, dinner at peak times at The Horse in Moretonhampstead and at the Ring of Bells in our village.
ARE THERE ANY EXTRA CHARGES?
- The listed price is based on one couple using one bedroom. Use of the second bedroom is charged at £10 per person per night.
- There’s a 2.5% commission fee to pay your balance by debit or credit card.
- If you wish to take the slippers home with you, we’ll deduct £20 per pair from your deposit.
HOW DO PAYMENTS WORK?
Your balance will be due two months prior to your arrival. We will send you an invoice for this near the time. A £300 damage deposit is due before you arrive. This will be refunded to you within a week of your departure (usually earlier). We accept bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and Paypal, but there’s a 3.4% commission fee on all card payments.
CAN I ADD EXTRAS AFTER I BOOK?
Yes, we just need three days’ notice to add extras.
DO YOU ACCEPT PETS?
Yes, we accept one small or medium-sized dog (Spaniel-sized or under), for a charge of £15. Please read our Pet Promise before you book.
WHAT IF I NEED TO CANCEL OR CHANGE MY DATES?
Once made, payments are not refundable and booking dates cannot be changed, so we suggest you take out travel insurance to cover for unexpected problems. However, if we manage to fill your reservation, or part of your reservation, we will refund you the difference. Note that the booking deposit is not refundable. Please give us as much notice as possible if you need to cancel. Our terms and conditions have full details.
IS THERE MOBILE RECEPTION?
Mobile reception is patchy in our village and across Dartmoor, but you can set up Wi-FI calling through our internet, or use our landline phone (there’s an honesty box for call costs).
DO YOU HAVE A BROCHURE?
No, but we have a flyers, postcards and gift vouchers that we’d be happy to send to you.
IS THERE PARKING?
There is free parking for one car at the back entrance to the cottage. There’s plenty more free parking on the village green.
WHERE CAN I DO MY FOOD SHOPPING?
There’s a big Sainsbury's off the A30 at Exeter (Alphington Rd - EX2 8NH). Our favourite place to food shop locally is Chagford, which has a lovely deli, village dairy, wine merchants, butchers, Co-Op and fruit and vegetable shop (The Courtyard Cafe sells organic). Our neighbour sells delicious Dartmoor wildflower honey and fresh eggs from an honesty box on his doorstep (his house is directly opposite the cottage's garden)
CAN I ORDER A FOOD DELIVERY?
Yes, Ocado (but not Waitrose), Tesco and Sainsburys deliver to the village.
IS THERE MOBILE PHONE SIGNAL?
There is very patchy mobile reception in the village and on the high moor, but Wi-Fi calling is available at the cottage and there's a landline phone with a honesty box for calls. The wi-fi password is milk1sugar.
WILL SOMEONE BE ON HAND IN CASE OF PROBLEMS?
Yes, myself and the housekeeper both live close by in case of problems.
