Dog-Friendly Romantic Breaks in Devon

Moorland View Cottage is peaceful Dartmoor retreat for couples who want a romantic break in Devon with their dog – without sacrificing style

Bringing a dog with you on holiday often slows the pace in the best possible way – encouraging longer walks, unhurried evenings and a more settled rhythm.

But finding a dog-friendly romantic break in Devon can feel like a compromise. Many cottages and hotels that allow dogs prioritise practicality over style.

Moorland View takes a different approach. First and foremost, it is a five-star, thatched romantic retreat for couples. By arrangement, we simply welcome one well-behaved, non-shedding adult dog – allowing you to enjoy the cleanliness, privacy and calm of a luxury Devon cottage without compromise.

Why Dartmoor Is A Haven For Dogs – And Their Owners

Away from the crowds found in busier, more congested parts of Devon, Dartmoor National Park offers a rare freedom for couples travelling with a dog.

Moorland View Cottage offers dog owners:

  • Traffic-free walking straight from the door

  • Open moorland, ancient woodland and quiet country lanes within easy reach

  • Traditional Dartmoor pubs where dogs are genuinely welcome

  • Cool, shallow rivers and shaded valleys – ideal in warmer weather

  • An enclosed, walled garden for relaxed outdoor time

  • A dog-friendly local culture that makes days out easy

  • A dedicated warm-water dog shower for muddy paws

  • A considered dog welcome pack

  • A curated selection of local walks chosen with dogs (and their owners) in mind

  • Yes – provided your dog has excellent recall and stays close to you. Most of our local walks are suitable for off-lead rambles.

However, dogs must be kept on leads on the open moor during the bird nesting season (typically spring to mid-summer), and livestock roam freely year-round. Sheep, cattle, wild ponies and deer are commonly encountered, often without warning.

Dogs that worry or chase livestock place animals at risk, and in serious cases farmers are legally permitted to protect their stock. For this reason, we always recommend using a lead anywhere livestock may be present unless you are completely confident in your dog’s response.

When in doubt, keep them close – it ensures a relaxed walk for everyone.

We’re happy to share suggestions for walks that suit you and your dog.

  • Our garden has chest-height granite walls, so medium-sized dogs who are determined escape artists could jump on – and over it – if they put their mind to it – so supervision is advised.

  • Absolutely! See our dog-friendly honeymoon guide for details.
